Harold Courlander American Corner

American Corner

The Monique Calixte Library was chosen to house an American Corner, an area for the promotion of American literature and culture, following a memorandum of understanding signed by the American Embassy in Haiti and the Fondation Connaissance et Liberté - FOKAL in 2009. This space was named after Harold Courlander, a prolific American ethnomusicologist in love with Haiti. The American Corner is a US initiative to develop a better understanding of American culture, history and politics in host countries. These specialized documentation centers are a partnership between the Embassy of the United States and an institution of the host country. The US government has inaugurated nearly 400 American Corners in 60 countries over the past decade.
